Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances and Coleridge‐Taylor's Violin Concerto
Amsterdam, Concertgebouw — Main Hall
About the Event
Brussels Philharmonic returns with Rachmaninoff's richly orchestrated Symphonic Dances. Before the intermission, Njioma Chinyere Grevious makes her debut at Het Concertgebouw with Coleridge‐Taylor's lyrical Violin Concerto, the same concerto with which she won the prestigious Sphinx Competition in Detroit in 2023.
Symphonic dances by Rachmaninoff
'The world needs symphonic music. And symphonic music needs the world.' That is the conviction of Brussels Philharmonic. Like last year, the Belgian radio orchestra is crowning their concert summer with a trip to Amsterdam. This time with Rachmaninoff's popular Symphonic Dances. The Russian grandmaster, best known for his virtuoso piano concertos, pulled out all the stops in his very last composition for a generous orchestral sound with dramatic contrasts and unusual sound combinations.
Njioma Chinyere Grevious plays Coleridge‐Taylor
With her convincing interpretation of Samuel Coleridge‐Taylor's Violin Concerto, Njioma Chinyere Grevious won the prestigious Sphinx Competition in Detroit as recently as 2023. Now she is making her debut at Het Concertgebouw with this relatively unknown concerto. The English composer of African descent had particular international success with his cycle The Song of Hiawatha. His passionate Violin Concerto — long neglected but now increasingly programmed — is an ideal example of his moving rhapsodic music.
