Amsterdam, Concertgebouw — Main Hall
About the Event
The Australian Youth Orchestra returns to Amsterdam with Australian violin prodigy Christian Li and Tchaikovsky's autobiographical Fourth Symphony. The seventeen‐year‐old top violinist plays Mendelssohn's beloved Violin Concerto. Didgeridoo player William Barton solos in Peter Sculthorpe's composition Earth Cry, a call to listen to Mother Earth.
Violin prodigy Christian Li plays Mendelssohn
Top Australian talent Christian Li, at 17, is even younger than most members of the Australian Youth Orchestra. He plays the solo in Mendelssohn's beloved and energetic Violin Concerto, which he also recorded on his critically acclaimed second album with Decca Classics. About his interpretation of the famous solo cadence in the first movement, Christian Li says, “I tried to create mysterious atmospheres, experimenting with dynamics, contours and tempo, to make it sound interesting and more like an improvisation.
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4
The Australian Youth Orchestra has traveled to Europe more than twenty times since its first tour abroad in 1972 and has been a regular guest at The Concertgebouw. This time the talented young musicians will play Tchaikovsky's autobiographical Fourth Symphony, a masterpiece full of melancholy and joie de vivre. Didgeridoo player William Barton, a master on this extraordinary instrument, will solo in Earth Cry by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe. The work is a call to listen to Mother Earth.
