Mahler's Symphony No. 1 & Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

About the Event

The Netherlands Youth Orchestra, celebrating 25 years this summer under the inspired direction of Jurjen Hempel, plays Mahler's First Symphony. Young Dutch piano virtuoso Nikola Meeuwsen, winner of the 2019 Concertgebouw Young Talent Award, will solo in Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini.

Mahler's Symphony No. 1
The Jeugdorkest Nederland, also known as the “Young Orange” of the Dutch music scene, selects over seventy talented young people between the ages of 14 and 20 each year. This summer, the top young musicians will play Mahler's inventive First Symphony with the famous third movement, which is a variation on the song “Father Jacob. Jurjen Hempel celebrates his 25th anniversary as the orchestra's chief conductor.

Nikola Meeuwsen plays Rachmaninoff.
He has already performed three times as a soloist with the Residentie Orkest, he won the 2022 Grachtenfestival Prize at age 20 as the youngest musician ever, and in 2019 he received the Concertgebouw Young Talent Award. Young Dutch piano virtuoso Nikola Meeuwsen has previously been a soloist with the Netherlands Youth Orchestra with Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto, praised by NRC: “His playing is characterized by elegant allure and great precision with crystal‐clear, fierce attack. Now he is soloing in Rachmaninoff's impressive and highly virtuosic Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini.
