About the Event

Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Amsterdam's breathtaking De Waalse Kerk for the ultimate concert set to awake your understanding of music.

The Bösendorfer Piano Series is a series of intimate piano recitals in which nine top pianists shine behind our Bösendorfer Imperial Grand grand piano.

They really shouldn't be missing from a piano series: Bach's Goldberg Variations. The well‐known anecdote tells that Bach wrote the variations at the behest of a count, who had the young Goldberg perform them as a cure for insomnia. Although there are serious doubts about the historical accuracy of this story, the name has remained. The monumental work that continues to amaze and move is certainly in safe hands with Korean star pianist William Youn. Indeed, he has played the work before in unusual settings: in collaboration with the Vienna State Ballet. It will no doubt have given him new insights, and perhaps tonight's performance will give you just that.

William Youn has been hailed as “a true poet on the piano.” One of the finest pianists of our time, he has earned an international reputation, especially with his Schubert recordings. His playing is characterized by subtlety, emotional insight and sensitive analysis. The 41‐year‐old pianist from South Korea has come a long way to realize his dream of becoming a pianist. From kindergarten in Seoul, where he first heard the sound of the piano, through Boston, Hanover and Como to Munich, where he studied with renowned piano pedagogue Karl‐Heinz Kämmerling. He plays in concert halls around the world, but he has remained a poet: “What matters to me is turning the notes into something human. That's how I see my profession.” His extensive discography includes acclaimed recordings, including a complete set of Mozart's piano sonatas and a trilogy of Schubert's piano sonatas.
