About the Event

Last year Tchaikovsky's challenging Rococo Variations appeared on his latest album with Erato, now cellist Edgar Moreau plays them with the Orchestre Nationale de Lille. Also heard is Berlioz's exuberant Symphonie fantastique, a hallucinatory love story including an insane nightmare in the form of a witches' Sabbath.

Compelling symphonic narrative
Joshua Weilerstein, the new artistic director of the Orchestre Nationale de Lille, lets his orchestra shine in Hector Berlioz's dashing Symphonie fantastique. Without words, Berlioz wrote a richly orchestrated and evocative story of an obsessive and unrequited love. From musings and passions, a trip to the countryside and a sumptuous ball to the passage to the scaffold and a wild witch dance.

ovsky's Rococo Variations with Edgar Moreau
Music magazine The Strad praised “Edgar Moreau's expressive range” and “exquisite sense of nuance” and, according to Gramophone, “his tone is exquisite, and his phrasing delightful. The young French cellist shot into the world of classical music like a comet just under a decade ago, after winning the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011 with the virtuoso Rococo Variations. Last year this Tchaikovsky masterpiece appeared on his latest album Rococo, now Moreau plays the heavenly variations with the Orchestre Nationale de Lille.
