About the Event
Harpsichordist Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya pays tribute to two great 18th‐century composers, Gottlieb Muffat and Johann Sebastian Bach. For composers before the 20th century, each key had specific meanings and feelings. For Muffat and Bach, D major was the key of triumph, victory, joy and “Shouting Hallelujah” (think of Handel's Messiah!). D minor, on the other hand, was more somber, often described as serious, pious and even as “melancholy femininity.”
In this program you will be taken on an emotional journey through all these meanings and feelings. At times the music is dramatic and devilishly virtuosic, at other times feathery, subtle or exuberant. Nepomnyashchaya recently released the music that will be played this afternoon. The album was well received by both domestic and foreign press.
