Bösendorfer Series: Ralph van Raat
Amsterdam, De Waalse Kerk
About the Event
Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Amsterdam's breathtaking De Waalse Kerk for the ultimate concert set to awake your understanding of music.
The Bösendorfer Piano Series is a series of intimate piano recitals in which nine top pianists shine behind our Bösendorfer Imperial Grand grand piano.
This evening Ralph van Raat takes us into the world of transcriptions. A world in which anything is possible, even the monumental Carmina Burana on piano! Before the break he will first play four organ works by Bach transcribed by Busoni. In his transcriptions, Busoni sought a balance between preserving the original and highlighting the unique qualities of the piano. Without this innovation, the transcription of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana may never have existed. The highly virtuosic arrangement brings a whole new perspective to the piece without losing the character of the original. It is extraordinary because this version is almost never heard in the concert hall and is a great challenge for the pianist.
Pianist and musicologist Ralph van Raat has been fascinated by contemporary classical music since he was a teenager. Consequently, he devotes most of his time to the music of today — although his repertoire is broad. Well‐known composers, including Tan Dun, David Lang and Gavin Bryars, dedicated music to him. The pianist also worked intensively with Arvo Pärt, György Kurtág, John Adams and Louis Andriessen, among others. Van Raat released a large number of internationally successful CDs, with various labels, many of which were domestic and foreign bestsellers. Since 2006 he has had a recording contract with Naxos International. In addition to his concert practice, he teaches contemporary piano music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and at the postgraduate program of the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo (Turin, Italy). In 2003 he was appointed Steinway Artist.
