Cavalli's Eliogabalo: Gotham Chamber Opera
About the Event
Gotham Chamber Opera transforms one of the city's hottest nightspots into the court and banquet hall of the decadent Roman emperor, Heliogabalus: James Marvel directs this daring production of Cavalli's Eliogabalo at The Box, on Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Composed in 1668, Cavalli's opera tells the story of a man who even today remains infamous for his sexual appetites, his appointment of an all‐female senate, and his death by assassination. The Gotham Chamber Opera brings the work to life in a contemporary context, where the entertainments preferred by the emperor will be interpreted by some of The Box’s alluring performers.
